Today in the AT&T Classroom RCET hosted high school students from Kent State’s Upward Bound 2014 Summer Institute. Students participating in today’s session were from Lorain City Schools & Windham Exempted Village Schools and are part of the Upward Bound Public Health program. The institute is a five-week residential program during which students have opportunities to take college-level courses and engage in a variety of hands-on experiences and field trips related to public health. Today’s session in the AT&T Classroom highlighted the role of digital tools in the field of public health. Students explored a variety of apps and online health-related games and were also introduced to tools that could be used for creating a reports, presentations, and/or public service announcements. Each student selected one of the tools and then created his/her own digital production highlighting their interests and goals for the institute.

Roosevelt High School

Teaching Professions

Rhonda Butler and Jaclyn Consilio  with their students in the Teaching Professions program came over to the AT&T Classroom to study the use of iPads in the classroom. The students investigated many of the educational apps on the iPads and select a number of them to used for creating projects for their portfolios.
The Teaching Professions’ program is designed for students who are interested in a teaching, school administration, or guidance counseling career.

Davey Elementary - Grade 4

Mrs. Lenzo's and Mrs. Gray's students from Davey Elementary school in Kent used their time in the AT&T Classroom to study and practice Geometry and Social Studies.  They used iPad apps such as Educreation to research and collect date about geometric shapes and then used this information to create an online lesson describing the characteristic of each shape. These lessons can be viewed from home or school. The students also used PowerPoint to create a presentation, iPod's for math practice, and kidblog to share information with each other and with their teacher.

This week in the AT&T Classroom

Longcoy fourth graders have been using digital tools for computing with whole numbers.
They have been using online resources at Online Math Learning and using the Educreations app to collaborative solve problems and communicate their findings with their iPads

Lippman second graders have been focusing on the creation of digital stories for enhancing students’ literacy skills (e.g., reading, writing, speaking & listening) and for targeting the “4Cs of 21st century skills” — critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Listed below are the apps and programs the children are using to create their stories:

ABCYa Paint is a free multimedia program that can be used to create pictures and stories using drawing/paint tools or by selecting from a variety of backgrounds, scenes, characters, & stickers.

iStopMotion can be used to create stop motion animations on an iPad or itouch.

Kerpoof is a free multimedia program that allows students to create animation & digital stories by using drawing tools or selecting from a variety of backgrounds, scenes, characters, & stickers

Photostory is a free MS application that allows you to create a multimedia presentation using digital photos and adding text and audio.

Puppet Pals is a free iPad app that allows you to create your own unique shows with animation and audio in real time.

Sock Puppet is a free app that can be used to create lip-synced videos to share on Facebook or YouTube.

Toontastic is a free iPad app that allows children to draw, animate, and share cartoons. Once they are done creating, Toontastic will play back their animation and voice as a cartoon to be shared online via ToonTube, Toontastic’s Global Storytelling Network.

2012-13 Cohort Begins in the AT&T Classroom

The 2012-13 school year is officially underway in the AT&T Classroom with teachers and students from Lippman School and Longcoy Elementary (Kent City Schools). From the Lippman School, teacher Sally Layman and her second graders are currently studying simple machines and the engineering design process using the LEGO WeDo Robotics system. The class is also investigating various tools and apps for digital story telling such as Kerpoof, KidPix 3D,  Photostory, Pic Collage, Toontastics, and iStopMotion.  Longcoy teacher Liz Shorr and her fourth graders are exploring the use of iPads as a learning tool to integrate language arts with math and social studies. Students use Educreations as an interactive whiteboard to show their work and used the StoryLine app to create a story problem to demonstrate their knowledge of place value.
RCET would also like to welcome the following students from the Honors College who are completing an Individual Honors Work Project in the AT&T Classroom this semester: Michelle Barrett, Carissa Deeds, Amy Fetterman, Julie Jacob, Erin Kline, Emily Merkel, Brittany Miller, and Pari Shah.

They used these pictures to create power point slide shows. The first graders were also introduced to simple machines through the use of the Lego Wedo kits.

Franklin Elementary

Mrs. Frank and Mrs. Ward
Franklin Elementary
Science and Language Arts

Mrs. Frank and Mrs. Ward shared their time in the ATT Classroom. Their students did research on the phases of the moon and created clay animations of the phases on the moon. They used Kid blog to share what they have learned with each other and with their teachers.  To complete their Language Arts assignments they use MS Word and also web resources that enabled them to create comic strips and animated characters.

Willyard Elementary

Mrs. Kandis Cutlip
Willyard Elementary
Earth & Space Science and Language Arts

Mrs. Kandis Cutlip students used many of the tools in the classroom to do research on the earth and our solar system. Brain Pop on the iPod Touches was a very useful app for studying about planets. They also used the 3D system in the room to investigate the movement of the stars and planets. During their time in the classroom they read and discussed the novel Frindle. After reading the novel the students were divided into groups of 4. Each group made a Claymation video of one of the chapters from the story.

Tappan Elementary

Mrs. Angela Kohl

Geometry and Fables

Mrs. Kohl students used many of the technology tools to study geometry and fables. They used GoShape and Kidspiration on the iPod Touches and the computers to create polygons and venn digraphs. Toontastic on the iPads was also very valuable to the students for creating their own fables. After studying Aesop’s fables, the students wrote their own fable stories and make it into a animated movies (Claymation).

Portage Path

Mrs. Feges
Portage Path
Math and Science

Mrs. Feges students used their time in the ATT Classroom to study Math and Science.
They used the Lego Wedo Kits to investigate how to build simple machines and robots with motors and sensors and how to program them to perform complicated movements.
The students recorded what they created with the iPod Touches and created presentation with Photostory.

Davey Elementary

Tracy Forman
Davey Elementary
Science – Forces in motion

The first graders of Tracy Forman’s class use their time in the AT&T Classroom to study forces in motion and living and non-living things. They used the Lego Wedo kits to create robots that perform movements with gears, levers and pulleys.  The research living and non-living things on the internet and create power point slide show to present to the class what they have discovered.
