Learning Genetics Through the Akron Zoo Captive Breeding Program


Traci Restivo, seventh grade science teacher from Bolich Middle school, Cuyahoga Falls City Schools, found a unique way to exite her students on the the subject of Genetics. With the cooperation of the Akron Zoo, two teleconferences were scheduled to educate the children on concepts essential to understanding data for wildlife in captivity. The students working in teams, were assigned one of four endangered species to investigate. Following extensive research on the animal, including phone calls to zoos across the country, the groups created a breeding recommendation and whared it with the Akron Zoo.
